A Drinking Life

Pete Hamill quit drinking on this day in 1972. It was 22 years later than he published "A Drinking Life," a memoir about his heavy drinking during the 1950s and 1960s and his decision to become sober. The book inspired Frank McCourt to write his acclaimed memoir, "Angela's Ashes."
