John Gardner won the National Book Critics Circle Award on this day in 1977 for "October Light," a novel about two siblings in New England. Gardner also wrote "Grendel," a retelling of the "Beowulf" legend from the monster's point of view. Gardner died in a motorcycle accident in 1982 at the age of 49.
