Congratulations to Karthik Nemmani, who won the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee!
The Texas eighth-grader correctly spelled “haecceitas,” then “koinonia,” to secure his victory late Thursday night.
“Koinonia” means “an intimate spiritual communion and participative sharing in a common religious commitment and spiritual community.”
Nemmani beat out 518 other competitors over three days to become the eleventh spelling champion from Texas in bee history.
But he almost didn’t make it to the starting line.
A new program called RSVBee, which allows spellers who didn’t win a regional bee or didn’t have a sponsor a chance to compete, enabled Nemmani to participate.
You can learn more about his incredible journey on the bee’s blog.
