If you were a kid in the 1980s and 1990s — or were involved in caring for one — you might’ve noticed that mice were the “it” species in children’s literature during those decades.

Writer Charlotte Ahlin recently realized this as an adult, and even as a self-described rodent lover, she couldn’t quite figure out why that was.
