Author Elizabeth H. Winthrop is clearly not one for taking the easy route.

Her latest novel, The Mercy Seat, centers on the scheduled execution of a black teenager convicted of raping a white girl.

And if the subject matter weren’t challenging enough, the tale is told over just nine hours by nine different characters.
