Junk food is what you’ll probably be eating throughout this weekend — it is not, however, a literary genre that you yourself aren’t particularly fond of.

Book Riot’s Jessica Avery spent two months chewing over how to politely and firmly make that point, after one particular romance-novels-as-frivolity article stuck in her craw.

This past week, she was finally ready to publicly tear down romance detractors who love the analogy of the genre as junk food.
