Sylvia Acevedo embodies the American Dream.

Her Brownies troop leader happened to notice the young Acevedo — who came from a financially struggling family — staring up at the stars one night.

The troop leader helped her identify a few constellations, putting her on the path to earning a master’s in engineering from Stanford, working as a rocket scientist for NASA, and ultimately leading the Girl Scouts.

Acevedo has written about this journey in a memoir, Path to the Stars, which she discussed with All Things Considered’s Elissa Nadworny.
