Ian McEwan has revealed the plot of his next novel, set to be released in April.

Machines Like Me is a return to speculative fiction for McEwan, with a heavy dose of science-fiction elements.

It’s the tale of Charlie and Miranda, a couple who meet in an alternative version of 1980s London. Charlie purchases a “synthetic human” named Adam, and he and Miranda program Adam’s personality together.

They create a “near-perfect human,” in the words of McEwan’s publisher, but also find themselves in a love triangle ... and a serious moral quandary.

You can read more about Machines Like Me on The Guardian’s website.
