A debut novel was among the three winners of the 2018 Kirkus Prizes.

Ling Ma’s Severance won the fiction award, accompanied by Rebecca Solnit’s Call Them by Their True Names in nonfiction and Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut by Derrick Barnes for young reader’s lit.

These three books were chosen from a pool of nearly 2,000 other works, and they’re netting their authors a $50,000 prize each (along with the accolades, of course).

NPR has the full shortlist and links to its coverage of each contender, when applicable, here.
