Some people can write. Others can draw. Still others can do neither.

A select few are talented in both areas, like Shaun Tan — who also, by the way, has a knack for directing films, too; he won an Academy Award for The Lost Thing.

His most recent project is a book titled Tales from the Inner City, which he wrote and also illustrated.

Tales from the Inner City doesn’t address poverty and blight, as one might expect, but rather the relationship between humans and animals living in a city.

Tan discussed his creative process and its most recent fruit on Weekend Edition; listen to him and Sacha Pfeiffer chat below or read a transcript on NPR’s website.
