A new novel takes place in the apartment building outside which John Lennon died and has its characters rubbing elbows with the former Beatle and his wife.

Yet The Dakota Winters isn’t really about John Lennon, or at least just about him, says author Tom Barbash.

His focus was more on the people who were close to Lennon in the final year of his life, including the father-son duo of Buddy and Anton Winter. (Hence the title.)

Buddy is a late-night talk-show host coming off a nervous breakdown; Anton, a former Peace Corps volunteer coming off a bout with malaria.

Learn more about them and, yes, their intersection with Lennon in Barbash’s interview with Scott Simon.
