This week’s By The Book feature is hopefully less controversial than last week’s.

Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin does admit that he has never gotten into science fiction and can’t quite understand the appeal of a novel voted the best Scottish book of all time, though.

And literary snobs might also take issue with his response to the question of what book he thinks everybody should read before dying.

Search for any drama here and do report back if we or the New York Times failed to spot any bigots in Rankin's recommended authors.
