Sad news to start the morning: Writer Francine du Plessix Gray died Sunday at the age of eighty-eight.

Gray gained fame in 1976 with her semi-autobiographical novel Lovers and Tyrants and continued her writing success throughout the years with nonfiction and more fiction alike.

She won the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2006 for Them: A Memoir of Parents, which took an unsentimental look at the emotional distance that marked her childhood.

You can read more about Gray’s life in her obituary in the New York Times.

And on the topic of literary deaths, we’ve also lost the children’s author and illustrator John Burningham.

The Guardian’s obituary for Burningham, who passed away January 4 at age eighty-two, can be read here.
