Warning: Squeamish readers may want to skip the full interview with the author of When Death Becomes Life.

The book is about Joshua Mezrich’s experiences in the operating room as a transplant surgeon.

Mezrich is now an associate professor in the division of multiorgan transplantation at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison.

He discussed his book and the issues surrounding organ donation — such as the incredible heroism of donors, the delicacy of talking about the procedure with families, and previous eras’ attitude toward it — on Fresh Air.

You can listen to the segment below or read a transcription on NPR’s website.
