Author Dave Cullen didn’t find out through TV or social media that another school shooting was happening on February 14, 2017.

Instead, he saw a flood of media requests pouring in — and since his book Columbine is considered the definitive account of the 1999 school shooting, he could make the next logical leap.

Cullen would go on to write another book about another school shooting, this time at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

In the lead-up to the tragedy’s one-year anniversary, he spoke with Weekend Edition’s Lulu Garcia-Navarro about that book, Parkland: Birth of A Movement, and the student survivors who gained such public prominence.

You can listen to their conversation below or read a transcript on NPR’s website.
