Many bookworms happily balance multiple books at once, while others prefer to take life one book at a time.

NPR’s Lynn Neary says a new novel, though, could please both types of readers.

Sandra Newman’s The Heavens stars a protagonist who, each time she wakes up from the dream in which she’s having an affair with William Shakespeare, finds that the real world has changed.

Between Kate’s dream and waking life, the book feels like five different stories, says Neary: historical fiction, time traveling fantasy, political allegory, social realism, and romance.

You can listen to Neary interview the author below or read a transcript of it on NPR’s website.
