Every movie comes to fruition thanks to countless workers whose names never make the marquee.
The Creature from the Black Lagoon is no exception, though its nearly anonymous crew has a pioneer among its ranks.
Milicent Patrick, who designed the creature, was Universal Studios’s first female monster designer, but internal politics at the company meant she was denied the credit she was due.
Author Mallory O'Meara has set out to rectify that, with a new book: The Lady from the Black Lagoon: Hollywood Monsters and the Lost Legacy of Milicent Patrick.
O’Meara spoke about her book on All Things Considered; you can listen to her and others who knew Patrick below or read a transcript on NPR’s website.
