Arkady Martine’s new novel, A Memory Called Empire, carries echoes of cultures past, from the Byzantines to the Aztecs.

That’s unsurprising, given that Martine’s past includes a stint as a historian ... of Byzantium.

Her novel may follow an ambassador from a remote space station, but it sends said ambassador to an imperial capital, where there’s “courtly manners, poetry and plotting,” in the words of NPR’s Petra Mayer.

Mayer and Martine discuss the various cultural and artistic influences on the novel in an interview on NPR's website.
