A new review of reading-speed research suggests that we’re actually not as fast as we think we are.

Marc Brysbaert from Ghent University in Belgium analyzed nearly two hundred previous studies to conclude that the average pace is actually 238 words per minute — well below the commonly cited 300 wpm.

Brysbaert’s paper hasn’t been peer-reviewed yet, so the British Psychological Society — which summarized the early findings — cautions that the estimate could change.
