Téa Obreht’s debut novel, The Tiger’s Wife, was a smash hit in 2011.

So understandably, readers eagerly anticipated a follow-up ... and writing said follow-up was an entirely new experience for Obreht, as she told NPR’s Lynn Neary.

Also new for Inland, which came out Tuesday: its setting.

Instead of the modern-day Balkans, where Obreht was born, Inland takes place in the American West during the late 1800s.

Read or listen to Obreht’s discussion of how she went about researching and dreaming up this new (but equally acclaimed so far) release on NPR’s website.

And for more from Obreht, check out her interview with TIME.
