The next word of the year from a dictionary is along the same theme as the previous one.

Oxford Dictionaries has chosen “climate emergency” as 2019’s signature word; earlier this month, Collins Dictionary chose “climate strike.”

Oxford defines climate emergency as “a situation in which urgent action is required to reduce or halt climate change and avoid potentially irreversible environmental damage resulting from it.”

Among the reasons Oxford chose it: by September, the expression was more than 100 times as common as it had been the previous year.
