Who better to choose the year’s outstanding books than authors who were shortlisted for — or won — literary prizes?

The Guardian asked several award winners and runners-up to choose their three favorite books of 2019.

Jojo Moyes, Bernardine Evaristo, Chigozie Obioma, Tommy Orange, and Tayari Jones were among the writers who shared the three books that most impressed them this year.

And if that’s too many to sort through, we understand and offer, in its place, the two titles that British bookstore chain Waterstones chose for its books of the year
