This may come a bit too late for organized holiday shoppers, but the Guardian picked the brains of two booksellers on the p’s and q’s of giving a book as a gift.

To be fair, one of the sources is a rare-book dealer, so his thoughts may not align with the average shopper’s.

But the good news? Everyone agrees that a book, even if it’s not to the recipient’s taste at all, is one of the safest presents you can buy.
