Fun fact: The woman who encouraged Harriet Beecher Stowe to write Uncle Tom’s Cabin was, in fact, also an author who even outsold contemporaries like Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne.

You’ve probably never heard of her, though.

A group of writers in Washington, D.C., where Emma Dorothy Eliza Nevitte (E.D.E.N.) Southworth found her fame in the mid- to late-1800s, is working to change that.

Southworth's work mostly appeared in magazines and newspapers, including a weekly one that gave her an exclusive contract; her best-known work was the serialized novel The Hidden Hand
