Author N.K. Jemisin has given NPR the very first public look at her upcoming novel, The City We Became.

In it, cities literally come alive, and the human avatars that represent them must face an evil from beyond.

You can read an excerpt of The City We Became, which will be released March 24, on NPR's website.

Jemisin, who writes science fiction and fantasy, became the first author to win three straight Hugo Awards for best novel; her work has also received the Nebula and Locus awards, among other honors.
