We’re officially in the twentieth-anniversary month of the beloved book Because of Winn-Dixie.

Earlier this year, the podcast The Yarn talked with author Kate DiCamillo about the effect and longevity of her debut novel.

We decided to share it now because the book came out in March 2000, but as it turned out, March 2020 is a time when we could all use light news and comfort reading.

DiCamillo’s young-adult novel describes the adventures of Opal, a young newcomer to a Florida town, and Winn-Dixie, the dog she picks up at the grocery store of the same name.

It received the Newbery Honor in 2001 and also was adapted into a movie starring AnnaSophia Robb, Jeff Daniels, and Cicely Tyson.
