Julia Alvarez’s first novel in fifteen years, Afterlife, was released yesterday.

The novel tells the story of Antonia, who retires from her professorial job only to have her husband pass away, her sister disappear, and a pregnant, undocumented teenager show up on her doorstep.

You can read an extensive excerpt from Afterlife on Literary Hub.

Among Alvarez’s other works are In the Time of the Butterflies and How the García Girls Lost Their Accents; in addition to being a bestselling writer, she received the 2013 National Medal of Arts.
