Last Saturday was a key date in the Harry Potter series, but author J.K. Rowling didn’t feel comfortable celebrating it.

Instead, she announced that she would donate £1 million (about $1.24 million) to two charities in the United Kingdom: one that helps the homeless and another that helps domestic abuse victims.

“Today’s the 22nd anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, but I’m going to be honest and say that it feels inappropriate to talk about fictional deaths today,” she tweeted.

“… So on this anniversary of a great wizarding victory, I’m thinking of the people who’re out there doing their jobs to protect us and our way of life.”

Rowling referenced three essential workers within her own family and acknowledged the mixture of pride and anxiety she feels over their work during the coronavirus pandemic.
