The Worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien: The Places That Inspired Middle-earth by John Garth comes out June 9, but the Guardian has a preview of it that includes what Garth believes to have been the inspiration for Saruman’s dark tower and the Barrow-downs, among other Middle-earth landmarks.
