A number of journalists and academics have signed an open letter that disputes a previous letter’s claim that “censoriousness” is spreading.

The original piece, published in Harper’s Magazine, was signed by more than 150 writers, academics, and artists, including such notable names as J.K. Rowling, Salman Rushdie, Margaret Atwood, and Malcolm Gladwell.

The rebuttal, which you can read at The Objective, expresses skepticism that there is truly a silencing of the type the original letter describes.

That type of silencing, however, has been imposed upon marginalized voices for “generations in journalism, academia, and publishing.”
