Author Q&A: Lola StVil

Today we're interviewing Lola StVil, a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author living in California.

StVil enjoys spending time with her family and staying in touch with her readers. She was seven when she first came to this country from Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

She attended Columbia College in Chicago, where her main focus was creative writing. In addition to plays, she also writes screenplays and short stories.  

She has been commissioned to write for ABC, CBS and Princeton University. She won the NAACP award for her play The Bones of Lesser Men, in addition to being nominated for LA Weekly awards. Her work has also received positive reviews from the LA Times, Variety and LA Weekly. 

SADYE: Tell us something about your writing process that’s unusual or that you haven’t revealed before.

LOLA: You have to let the characters take full control and guide you.

If you try to force it, everything you write will show that. The stronger the character, the louder the voice.

SADYE: Which of your characters would you most and least like to trade places with?

LOLA: I would absolutely love to trade places with Emmy from The Guardians series.

She is strong, resilient, and cares about everyone. She sees the good in even the darkest of souls and refuses to give up on all those she loves.

I would least like to trade places with Bianca from the same series, She was cold, manipulative, and selfish, and all my readers absolutely hated her from the minute she entered her first scene.

SADYE: Which of your characters would you most and least like to become romantically involved with?

LOLA: I would love to get involved with Logan from the Hunter Brothers series, because every girl loves a bad boy, and that one is so devoted he literally came back from another country to protect the love of his life.

Even though they were at odds when she called, she knew she could trust him and only him to keep her safe.

I would least like to be involved with Wolf from the Guardians series.

He seems like an amazing guy at first, but then after he fell for Ameana, he became controlling and possessive and not only lost his life in the process but destroyed so many others.  

SADYE: What message or theme would you like readers to take away from your work?

LOLA: You can find strength in the most unlikely of places, even if it’s a quiet strength inside you that you didn’t know you had.

Family is everything, and that doesn’t always mean your biological family either, as Rage learned throughout the Guardians series, and Kane in Kissed by Shadows, and even in my romance books.  

Family is what you make it as long as there’s love, loyalty and dedication. Anyone can be your family, and they will go to great lengths to protect you just as you will for them.

SADYE: What advice, as relates to your writing career, would you give your younger self?

LOLA: Just write; it’s not always going to be perfect on the first try, but you need to keep writing no matter what.

And don’t always second-guess yourself.
