It’s hard to say what caught our attention most in the story about author Annabel Steadman’s record book deal.
Was it the fact that at just twenty-eight years old, the British lawyer received a “major” seven-figure sum for her first novel and two sequels to it?
Or was it that her series is about bloodthirsty unicorns?
At any rate, Steadman’s first book in the Skandar and the Unicorn Thief series will come out in spring 2022, having signed what her publisher believes is the most lucrative deal ever for a debut children’s author.
The stories, for ages nine and up, describe a world in which unicorns are deadly and can only be tamed by those who hatch them.
The film rights for them have already been snapped up, too, by Sony Pictures in what the Guardian called an “aggressive” seven-figure deal.
