The way to a man’s heart might be through his stomach, but the latter organ is apparently the route to a woman’s mind.

That, at least, is the takeaway from All Stirred Up: Suffrage Cookbooks, Food, and the Battle for Women’s Right to Vote, which came out in August.

Author Laura Kumin examines some actual turn-of-the-century cookbooks to illustrate the other ways, beyond marches and rallies, that suffragists worked to win supporters to their cause.
