Jan Morris, who broke both huge news stories and silence about being transgendered in her writing, has died.

She died this morning at age ninety-four.

Morris reported on such historic events as the first ascension of Mount Everest and released several books before releasing Conundrum, a memoir that described her transition from biologically male to female.

She continued to write in the decades following, most notably publishing a three-volume history of the British empire (Pax Britannica) and a Booker Prize-shortlisted novel (Last Letters from Hav).
