Between the World and Me began as a letter from writer Ta-Nehisi Coates to his son.

Now it’s a National Book Award-winning title, a play, and a TV performance.

Coates spoke with NPR’s Audie Cornish about HBO’s adaptation of his book and what it means in 2020, a year marked by increasingly louder calls for social justice.

You can read a transcript of their conversation on NPR’s website or listen to their discussion below, and you can also go behind the scenes of Between the World and Me's journey from page to play to screen thanks to the New York Times.
