The Guardian's David Shariatmadari has taken the Oxford English Dictionary approach to choosing a word of the year.

Rather than one, he has shared several picks for most influential; his list, of course, includes several pandemic-related words, but we encourage you to check out his list to see which ones don’t refer back to diseases.

That said, 2020 had several low moments not related to COVID-19, so don’t be surprised at the overwhelming cynicism of the list.
