When about 240 rare and valuable books valued at a combined $3.2 million were recovered last fall, book lovers of all walks of life breathed a sigh of relief.

The cache, found under a house in Romania, had been stolen in 2017 and contained first editions of works by Galileo Galilei and Isaac Newton, among other treasures.

How did authorities crack the case — and how did the thieves make off with so much loot in the first place?

Reporter Mark Wilding takes us on this epic journey, starting with two very sure-footed burglars and passing through the evolution of book theft before arriving at the convictions of twelve men in this great book heist.
