The five category winners for the Costa Book Awards were announced yesterday.
These five books will compete for the overall title, to be revealed January 26:
-
First novel: Love After Love, by Ingrid Persaud.
-
Novel: The Mermaid of Black Conch, by Monique Roffey.
-
Biography: The Louder I Will Sing, by Lee Lawrence.
-
Poetry: The Historians, by Eavan Boland.
-
Children's book: Voyage of the Sparrowhawk, by Natasha Farrant.
Each of these titles, deemed among the most outstanding books of the year written by UK- or Ireland-based authors, receives £5,000 ($6,800) and a chance at the £30,000 ($40,900) Costa Book of the Year prize.
The Bookseller notes that the majority of winning authors — Roffey, Lawrence, and Boland — are independently published.
Last year’s overall winner was The Volunteer by Jack Fairweather.
