How much more 2020 could 2021 get?

Fanfiction readers can provide an answer to that, unfortunately: a systemwide outage of your favorite pandemic activity.

VICE reports that Archive of our Own, an award-winning fanfiction website, crashed during the first weekend of the year.

The outage wasn’t tied to any particular upload or release; AO3 has simply seen a steady increase in traffic since COVID-19 hit, and VICE theorizes that many readers were eager to kick back after the holidays and enjoy reading material.

Head to VICE for some of the funnier reactions to the AO3 outage as well as an overview of fanfic’s rise.
