We evidently really love a well-said putdown.

The so-called literary burn book — Really and Truly: A Book of Literary Confessions, which includes unvarnished opinions from such writers as Virginia Woolf, Rebecca West, and Hilaire Belloc — was expected to fetch £4,000 (about $5,400) at auction.

It brought in seven times that amount: £21,000 ($29,000); no word on the identity of the buyer.

William Mackesy, grandson of participating novelist Margaret Kennedy, found the questions (collected in a journal) in his late grandmother’s belongings and made them public in March 2019.
