Presidents are well-known to dabble in literature — after all, their lives typically beg for memoirs to be written.
Abraham Lincoln, who was born on this day in 1809, showed a slightly different interest in writing, though: that of fiction.
Smithsonian magazine has reprinted a true-crime short story that Lincoln published in his local paper, The Quincy Whig, in the 1840s.
The inspiration for the story was a trial in which Lincoln successfully defended a client against murder charges.
