The longlist for the 2021 Women’s Prize for Fiction is out, and it contains a milestone moment.
For the first time, a trans woman has been nominated for the £30,000 ($41,700) award: Torrey Peters.
The prize had faced some heat last year from nominated author Akwaeke Emezi — who is nonbinary and transgender — who criticized organizers for seeking information on their sex as defined “by law.”
Organizers later said that any “cis woman, a transgender woman or anyone who is legally defined as a woman or of the female sex” could apply.
Peters is also notable in that her novel is among the six debut books on the list, notes the Guardian.
Here’s a complete list of the nominees; the shortlist comes out April 28, with a winner revealed July 7.
