Congratulations are in order for Carmen Maria Machado, whose memoir has won the 2021 Rathbones Folio Prize.

In the Dream House: A Memoir was celebrated by judges as presenting something “extremely rare” in literature: domestic abuse in a female relationship.

The book addresses the actual events of Machado’s relationship and also explores the bigger picture, from her upbringing to cultural depictions of lesbian relationships and more.

Each chapter uses a different narrative trope, including haunted house, erotica, and the bildungsroman.

The Rathbones Folio Prize celebrates the best work of literature regardless of genre and grants its recipient £30,000 (about $41,500).

More of the judges’ praise for In The Dream House, in addition to other coverage of the prize, can be found on the Rathbones website.
