We often share stories of rare books headed to auction — and to jaw-dropping sale prices.

We don’t often get to share that the auctions end up benefiting great causes.

Today, though, Literary Hub has given us that opportunity.

The private collection of late philanthropists and collectors Elaine and Alexandre P. Rosenberg will head to auction on April 23.

In it are about one dozen Books of Hours, one of which is expected to sell for over £8 million (over $11 million), and a complete first edition of the works of Plato.

But the Rosenbergs’ survivors will honor their wishes and donate proceeds from the auction to support rare-books collections at museums.
