Lord Byron was known to have been an ardent supporter of the Greeks’ fight for independence.
Recently, during the bicentenary of that war’s beginning, even more proof of that support was discovered.
The Guardian reports that a banknote was found in Greece’s state archives that gives further details of Byron’s generosity.
The note gives £4,000 – or roughly £332,000 ($464,370) today — to a representative of Greece’s provisional government, to support its fight for independence.
You can see an image of Byron’s check, along with more information about the poet’s love of Greece, in the Guardian.
