Writer Maya Angelou will be among the first women to be honored by the American Women Quarters Program.

The New York Times reports that the US Mint will begin issuing these special quarters, featuring influential women in US history on the reverse side of the coins, over the next four years.

The Angelou quarter and one with astronaut Sally Ride will appear first, in January; the Mint is accepting suggestions for the remaining women, with a total of up to twenty expected over the program’s four years.

Angelou, best known for I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, also wrote and delivered a poem for US President Bill Clinton’s inauguration, elegized South African President Nelson Mandela by request of the US State Department, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
