Book-burnings are nothing new, sadly.
However, one recent instance of destruction stood out because of who was doing the burning — the books’ author.
Last Friday, author Jeanette Winterson announced, in words and a photo on Twitter, that she’d set a pile of her newly republished books ablaze.
Her reason? She “hated the cosy little domestic blurbs” on The Passion, Written on the Body, Art and Lies, and The Powerbook.
Winterson expounded on that complaint in a statement to the Guardian.
Winterson’s debut novel Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, a coming-of-age tale that explored sexuality, was a career-launching hit; her most recent work is Frankissstein, and she has two more works coming out this fall.
