Even if you’re not especially interested in James Baldwin, the news of a never-aired 1979 profile of him might hold a bit of interest.
That’s because, according to Literary Hub, the ABC 20/20 crew showed up, cooked breakfast for Baldwin, woke him up, and then interviewed him before he had a chance to drink any alcohol.
Unfortunately, the profile’s producer — Joseph Lovett, who went on to become an acclaimed documentarian — was told that the work he’d done would be shelved because no one was interested in the “has-been” Baldwin.
The ten-minute segment wasn’t destroyed, though, and you can watch it online now.
Among Baldwin's best-known works are Go Tell It on the Mountain and Notes of a Native Son.
