Author Robert Quackenbush, best known for his Henry the Duck children’s books, has died.
The New York Times reports that he passed away May 17 at age ninety-one.
The two hundred-plus books Quackenbush wrote starred several animal detectives, including Miss Mallard (who received her own TV series), Sheriff Sally Gopher, Sherlock Chick, and Detective Mole (who earned his creator an Edgar Allan Poe Award for best juvenile mystery).
According to his obituary, Quackenbush picked up illustrating children’s books as a side gig in the 1970s and began writing his own as a way to comfort his son over the youthful teasing that their unusual last name inspired.
