A tablet that records some of the epic of Gilgamesh is itself progressing on quite the journey.
The Guardian reports that the 3,600-year-old stone known as the “Gilgamesh Dream Tablet” has been ordered forfeited from Hobby Lobby.
US law enforcement officials seized the tablet in 2019, and it has been officially forfeited to the government as of Tuesday.
The tablet originated in what is now Iraq; it made its way to Hobby Lobby in 2014 with a false provenance letter, according to the Department of Justice.
Hobby Lobby has previously returned thousands of Iraqi artifacts, which it learned were smuggled after purchasing them, and said it “should have exercised more oversight and carefully questioned how the acquisitions were handled.”
